April / May 2004

In mid-February Felice signed a three-year lease to rent 424 King St. On the corner of King and John streets, the space is located in the middle of what is known as the Upper King St. District. The unique stores and heavy traffic are what drew us into the area. But what sold us on the space were its possibilities.

Some might have turned away from the white walls, brown floors, and metal shelves bolted into the wall. Yet Felice picked up copies of Vogue, Elle Decor, and Bazaar and began dreaming of how she would transform it into a space of her own. Should we make it stark and modern, fancy and expensive-looking, shabby chic? Glamorous and fun was our final pick for the decor with a heavy concentration in display and lighting.

With a lot of help from Felice's husband Hume, we remodeled the space into what some call "Felice Designs," but we call "heaven." However heaven was not created in a day. Nights and weekends were spent painting walls and mirrors, installing shelves and molding... It is a universal truth that all projects take longer than anticipated!

I am usually inclined to say that it is also a universal truth that projects never turn out how you initially dream they will. But, this one DID turn out exactly how we wanted it to. Most importantly, the jewelry is displayed well with great lighting directed on it.

The morning of April 1st Felice cut the ribbon to open the new store to the public. Friends gathered to share Krispy Kreme doughnuts and champagne. Flowers arrived all day long from supportive clients, family, an good friends.

We had another party on April 22nd to formally introduce Felice Designs to the new neighborhood. Our parents and sister, Kathleen came from New Orleans. Hume's mother and grandmother came from North Carolina.

Showing our loved ones the finished product was great fun, and we celebrated together all evening long.
