Now in her own store on King Street in Charleston, South Carolina Felice Viguerie Killian is fulfilling her dreams. One thought comes to mind when entering her colorful shop: sensory overload. Wall to wall glass jewelry in every color imaginable greets you as you step inside. Move further in and you will find Felice hovered above a propane torch, goggles on, spinning and layering soft moretti glass in the flame. The technique is called lampwork, and Felice has been using it to make glass beads since 1994. But her jewelry business started long before she was introduced to lampwork.
As a sophomore in high school, Felice was creating huge, funky earrings out of seed beads strung on stiff gardening wire. For six dollars a pair teachers and fellow classmates at the Louise S. McGehee School in New Orleans, LA bought her wild creations. Constantly craving new avenues of design, Felice discovered the possibilities of Fimo clay. As she mastered the art of clay beads, Felice Designs took root in her native New Orleans.
Her business blossomed with the support of Felice's parents and McGehee's School. Fostered in such an environment, Felice Designs grew as Felice did, and her jewelry was soon sold in shops around town.
Inevitably Felice Designs moved with Felice to the College of Charleston. As a freshman, Felice traveled home one weekend for a glass bead making class. She returned to Charleston with a new source of inspiration, and Felice Designs' glass jewelry spread like wild fire. Graduating in May of 1997, Felice began working full time from her apartment. Since then she has been in a few studio spaces before opening her own shop in April 2004.
Felice Designs continues to grow and change as new ideas flood Felice's imagination. Yet, quality and detail are constants that will remain in her jewelry.
